Continuing to Build our Story Criteria
Throughout all our reading and exploration we co-constructed the criteria around what Makes a Good Story? Here's the list we decided upon. We used this list to guide all our discussions and the next step, creating our own stories! All through the process we self assessed our work and based our feedback on this criteria.
We Become Authors!
After co-constructing our criteria of story elements and discussing what makes a good story, we decided it was time to start writing our own stories. We started by using the outlines from our read alouds to create a story together! We used popplet as well to plan out ideas for our story, as well as where we could possibly start to create our story.
After lots of creation and discussion we agreed that figuring out the setting, characters and ideas for the story had to happen before working on the details of the beginning, middle and end. We then decided to create a class story about Mr. Boyd (our principal) and a ghost on the playground. Here are a few examples of their story maps from this step.
The Writing Process
After creating one story together as a class, it was time to branch out and
create our own stories with all the story elements. Students were put into partner groups and asked
to collaborate to come up with their own new story with original characters.
Next, our Grade 6/7 carepartners helped us to script our stories out (based on the outlines)
Finally, we illustrated the different parts of our stories, including the math concepts. On the next page you can view our finished projects. We hope you enjoy them, and feel free to leave us a comment.
